Hopi Ear Candling & Indian Head Massage

What are Hopi Ear Candles?

Thermal Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi Ear Candles) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears used for a variety of conditions.

A Brief History

This is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. The practice reached the modern world via the Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona. Ear candles were used traditionally by Shaman healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies. Candles made today are based on an old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians.

How do Hopi Ear Candles Work?

The candles are made from natural ingredients - beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St Johns Wort, chamomile and organically grown flax

The candles work on a chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed.

They equalise the pressure in the head and ears, making them suitable for most conditions. The flow of secretion is gently stimulated and the vapour collects, removing impurities or deposits.

Most of these are carried away through the candle chimney, although some of them can be found condensed in the candle after its removal from the ear, for example, wax residue, or could even work their way up to the surface 24-48 hours later.

About Hopi & Indian Head Massage #02A typical treatment

You will be asked to lie comfortably and listen to relaxing music. A candle is then gently placed into the Auditory Canal, where it will be lit. The candle is held in a vertical position and kept steady. You will experience a warm, comfortable feeling and a pleasant crackling sound as the candle burns down. The treatment is then repeated on the other ear. Both ears will be treated in all cases. Most clients find the treatment deeply relaxing, and some even fall asleep!

When both candles have been used a short but relaxing facial massage will be given. Some candles will burn more quickly then others but on the whole a treatment will take about 45 minutes.

Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massage ?

Indian Head Massage is a massage of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face and can often bring immediate relief from tension in these areas. This popular massage can benefit clients and usually leaves them feeling relaxed but also rejuvenated and more focused.

A typical treatment

The client sits upright in a comfy chair whilst the therapist works on the muscles of the upper body; manipulations of the neck, scalp and shoulders are particularly effective at melting away stress as these areas are usually the tensest.

The routine has evolved from traditional techniques that have been used in India for hundreds of years. As the massage proceeds clients relax and breathe more deeply. The treatment finishes with a brief face massage during which pressure points are stimulated to help relieve sinus pressure and increase alertness.

Most clients find the treatment deeply relaxing, and some even fall asleep!

What are the benefits of Indian Head Massage?

  • A relief from muscular tension, especially stiffness in the neck and shoulders
  • Increased joint mobility
  • Improved circulation which will help disperse toxins such as lactic acid from the muscles
